Making the Case
A fifth of all children in England, and close to a third of disadvantaged children, are unable to read well when they leave primary school.
This prevents them from achieving their potential in secondary school, and beyond, and creates obstacles to a fairer society.
A few Statistics
16%
The evidence connecting low literacy to social and economic inequality is compelling: adults with functional literacy earn 16% more than those without.
£30B
If every child left primary school with the reading skills they need, the British economy could be more than £30 billion bigger by 2025.
48%
Research has shown 48% of offenders in custody have the reading age at or below that of an average 11 year old.
